All Tinley Park homes must have working smoke detectors per the Illinois Smoke Detector Act (425 ILCS 60). Since January 1, 2023, replacement smoke alarms in homes built before 1988 must be 10-year sealed-battery units. Required on every floor and outside each sleeping area.
The Illinois Smoke Detector Act (425 ILCS 60) requires every dwelling to have working smoke detectors installed on every level and within 15 feet of each sleeping area. Effective January 1, 2023, when replacing battery-operated smoke alarms in homes built before 1988 (those not required to have hardwired detectors), owners must use 10-year sealed-battery units. Hardwired detectors in newer homes must continue to be maintained and replaced as needed. The Tinley Park Fire Department offers safety inspections and participates in smoke-alarm outreach programs for seniors and at-risk households. Landlords are responsible for providing working detectors at the start of a tenancy; tenants are responsible for battery replacement during the lease. Contact the Fire Department at (708) 444-5300.
Failure to maintain working smoke detectors is a state-law violation subject to fines up to $100 for a first offense and up to $200 for subsequent offenses. Landlord violations can also trigger property-maintenance citations.
