Tinley Park, IL Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

07(E)(2), Article 110 of the adopted electrical code, requires smoke detectors to be installed in accordance with State of Illinois requirements, then adds village-specific standards on top. Detectors must be dual voltage, 120V with battery back-up, and wired in series, and that requirement applies on all levels of a dwelling and in every bedroom, not just common areas. Under state law referenced directly in the section, 425 ILCS 60/ and Public Act 100-0200, any new smoke alarm installed in a single-family or multifamily residence must have a mandatory 10-year sealed battery.

The code also requires a 120V smoke detector near heating units located in normally unoccupied areas such as attics, crawl spaces, and basements, since those spaces can host a heat source without anyone present to smell smoke early. Conduits running to smoke detectors, heat detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors must be sealed to prevent condensation from interfering with the sensor. The same subsection separately requires a listed detection device in laundry rooms, interconnected with the smoke detectors, and listed heat detection in attached garages, also interconnected with the smoke alarm system.

Low-voltage fire alarm wiring run through non-accessible concealed spaces must be piped in conduit point to point, with free air in the ceiling supported by D-rings, rather than left as exposed low-voltage cable.
