Skokie enforces the Illinois Smoke Detector Act (425 ILCS 60/) along with locally adopted International Fire Code provisions. As of January 1, 2023, any newly installed smoke alarm in most residences must be a 10-year sealed-battery or hardwired model. Alarms are required on every story and outside each sleeping area.
Under the Illinois Smoke Detector Act (425 ILCS 60/) as amended in 2017, any smoke alarm newly installed in a single-family or multi-family dwelling (other than those built after 1988 with hardwired systems) must be a 10-year sealed-battery unit or hardwired, effective January 1, 2023. Skokie enforces this standard alongside the adopted International Residential Code and International Fire Code, which require smoke alarms on every story (including basements), outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom in new construction and major renovations. Battery-operated, replaceable-battery smoke alarms installed before 2023 may be used until they reach end-of-life, at which point they must be replaced with a compliant 10-year unit. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required within 15 feet of every sleeping area under state law.
Missing or non-functional smoke alarms are violations carrying fines of $100 to $1,500 per offense under local code. Landlords may face additional Rental Unit Registration consequences. Illinois state-law non-compliance can also trigger separate penalties.
