Oak Park, IL Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Article 33 of the Village's business licensing chapter lets the Village license a historic home as an accessory use tour house, the designation Oak Park uses for homes such as its Frank Lloyd Wright era properties that are opened to paid public tours, but only after the Board of Trustees approves the use by special ordinance and the Village issues an annual license under Section 8-33-2. Section 8-33-4 lists the standards that license depends on, and subsection D adds fire safety requirements on top of whatever fire, building and housing code already governs the underlying one- and two-family dwelling.

Item 6 of that subsection is the smoke detector mandate: detectors on every building level, including the basement, with battery powered units tested regularly per the manufacturer's instructions. The same subsection requires manual fire extinguishing equipment on each floor, forbids locking devices that block a required exit, and requires the owner to submit an evacuation plan and floor plan to the Fire Department showing the location of the smoke detectors before a license issues. The maximum occupancy for the tour house is separately set by the Fire Department under Section 8-33-4(B) and must be posted and followed at all times.

This smoke detector standard is specific to licensed tour houses under Article 33; the Village's bed and breakfast article imposes a parallel but separately worded smoke detector rule for that different use under Section 8-32-4(H)(10)(b). A property cannot be licensed, or keep its license, without meeting the Article 33 standard.
