Outdoor burning rules in Oak Park, IL β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Oak Park prohibits open burning of yard waste, leaves, trash, and construction debris. The only permitted outdoor fires are recreational fires in approved fire pits and barbecue grills used for cooking. Illinois EPA regulations and Cook County Health Department rules reinforce the prohibition on open burning. Yard waste must be collected through the Village's curbside program.
Under both Village Code and Illinois Environmental Protection Act regulations, open burning is prohibited in Oak Park. This includes burning of leaves, grass clippings, tree branches, construction debris, household trash, and any other materials. The prohibition applies year-round without exception. Recreational fires in approved portable fire pits are permitted (see fire-pit-rules) as are charcoal and gas grills used for cooking food. Burning of yard waste was historically common in the Chicago suburbs but has been prohibited for decades due to air quality concerns. Oak Park provides comprehensive yard waste collection: weekly curbside pickup of yard waste in biodegradable bags (April through November), a fall leaf collection program, and Christmas tree collection in January. The Village also operates a community composting program. Contact Public Works at (708) 358-5700 for yard waste collection schedules.
Open burning violations carry fines of $100 to $750. The Fire Department may order immediate extinguishment. Burning prohibited materials also violates Illinois EPA regulations, which carry separate state penalties. Air quality complaints can be filed with the Cook County Department of Environment & Sustainability.
