Chino, CA Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

California's Fire Hazard Severity Zone program (CAL FIRE / Office of the State Fire Marshal) classifies land based on long-term wildfire likelihood and intensity. State Responsibility Area (SRA) and Local Responsibility Area (LRA) maps were updated in 2024–2025 under Government Code §51178. The Chino Valley Fire District formally adopted the updated LRA maps for the City of Chino through CVFD Ordinance 2025-01, with a first reading May 14, 2025, public hearing/second reading July 9, 2025, and an effective date of September 1, 2025. Designated zones in Chino: most of the developed core of the city is unzoned (low risk), but parcels in the southwest and along the foothill edge near the Puente-Chino Hills corridor and Chino Hills State Park boundary are mapped as Moderate, High, or Very-High FHSZ. Adjacent Chino Hills has 24,000+ acres mapped, including 7,300+ acres of Very-High FHSZ in the State Park. Owner obligations in High or Very-High FHSZ: (1) defensible space under PRC §4291 (100 ft, Zones 0/1/2 per Board of Forestry rules); (2) new construction and major additions must meet California Building Code Chapter 7A (Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure) — ignition-resistant siding, ember-resistant vents, Class A roofing, tempered or multi-pane windows; (3) Natural Hazard Disclosure under Civil Code §1103 on sale or lease; (4) compliance is verified before a defensible-space compliance certificate or escrow release.
