Ankeny, IA Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Food Truck Permits (2026)

Ankeny Code of Ordinances Section 142.02(1) makes it unlawful to sell food or beverages to the public from a mobile food unit within city limits without first obtaining a City mobile food unit license, on top of any state, federal or county permits already required; skipping the license is a simple misdemeanor with a fine of at least $100 plus surcharge and court costs. The annual license runs through March 31 and must be renewed before the first event after that date, while a single-event license covers no more than three consecutive days, and each unit needs its own license with no transfers allowed.

Applications go to the City Clerk's Office at least ten business days before the first day of operation and must include the applicant's identity, kitchen and safety equipment description, vehicle registration, photographs, an Ankeny Fire Department inspection certificate for Class II through IV vendors, written property owner consent, and proof of at least $1 million per-occurrence liability insurance naming the City as certificate holder. Applicants also undergo a background check through a City-preferred vendor and an Ankeny Police Department character review; anyone with a felony charge in the past five years, a felony conviction in the past ten years, or a forcible felony conviction at any time is barred, as is anyone with a misdemeanor conviction (excluding traffic) in the past two years.

A denied applicant may appeal in writing to the City Council within seven days of denial, but a denial otherwise locks out reapplication for one year. Catering businesses, on-site restaurant grilling, approved sports-venue concessions, City-sponsored events, and the seasonal Uptown Ankeny Farmers Market are exempt from the licensing requirement.
