Ankeny, IA Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Vending Zones (2026)

Chapter 142 of the Ankeny Code of Ordinances sets the location rules for every licensed mobile food unit. Section 142.02(5) bars operation on public property unless the vendor holds an approved special event permit from the City Clerk's Office for use within a City park or greenway. Section 142.02(8)(C) limits units to nonresidential properties, with only two carve-outs: an approved residential block party or a private catering arrangement, both still subject to the rest of the chapter. Section 142.02(8)(D) adds an hours limit for any unit sitting within 300 feet of a residential use or residentially zoned property, restricting sales to 7:00 a.m. through 10:30 p.m.

On nonresidential ground, Section 142.02(8)(E) further ties operating hours to the host business's or park's own posted hours, plus a 30-minute setup and teardown window; if the host has no posted hours, the unit may not stay on site more than 18 hours and must then leave for at least 6 hours. Section 142.02(8)(L) keeps trucks at least 100 feet from any permanent restaurant unless that restaurant consents in writing, and Section 142.02(8)(H) forbids a truck from eating into a lot's required minimum parking count.

Units must maintain 15 feet of separation from each other and 5 to 15 feet from buildings depending on the State of Iowa food-service class, and may not sit on a vacant lot or block fire, police or pedestrian access. The Ankeny Farmers Market at Uptown's Ankeny Market & Pavilion is exempt from the licensing chapter entirely from May through September.
