Somerville, MA Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Sidewalk & Mobile Vending (2026)

Section 8-366 governs how a licensed mobile food vendor may operate once Inspectional Services has issued its license under Section 8-362. Subsection (f) bars a vendor from placing any materials on the public sidewalk, specifically naming tables, chairs or other seating, A-frame signs, coolers, and promotional materials, unless the city council has separately approved it; a truck's footprint has to stay off the sidewalk itself. Subsection (g) adds a buffer around existing restaurants: a vendor cannot park within 50 feet of a restaurant entrance unless it has written consent from the restaurant owner, a direct check on food trucks competing at a brick-and-mortar's front door.

The same section requires vendors to stick to their approved hours, offer a public waste container they empty at their own expense, sweep adjacent streets, sidewalks, and alleys within 100 feet for litter, and comply with board of health, traffic and parking, and noise regulations. Licenses aren't location-exclusive: subsection (a) makes clear that a license doesn't grant exclusive use of any route or spot beyond the specific time and place the license names, and any exception to approved hours, location, or vendor count needs prior written approval from ISD, Traffic and Parking, and Economic Development together under subsection (h).
