Taunton, MA Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: Sidewalk & Mobile Vending (2026)

A of the Peddlers, Solicitors and Vendors chapter requires anyone who goes from place to place within Taunton selling or bartering goods, wares or merchandise from a cart, wagon, other vehicle, or in any other manner, to first obtain a license from the Sealer of Weights and Measures. The rule reaches sidewalk and street sellers broadly, whether on foot with a pushcart or driving a small vehicle. It carves out one narrow exemption: a person selling uncultivated fruits, nuts or berries, farm products they raised themselves, or fish they caught themselves does not need this license.

Subsection B sets the license fee at $52 a year, covering both the license and the required badge, and the Sealer can revoke it at any time for a violation of the Revised Ordinances or other good cause. Subsection C conditions issuance on two certificates: one from the Board of Health confirming the vendor's vehicle, receptacles and utensils are sanitary, and one from the Sealer confirming the vendor's weighing and measuring devices have been inspected and sealed. Subsection D requires the license be signed, carried for inspection on demand by the Mayor, a Council member, the Sealer, the City Treasurer/Collector, the City Clerk, a constable, police officer or justice of the peace, and worn as a numbered badge reading "peddler" at all times while working.
