Gardena, CA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Gardena Municipal Code § 9.52.020 requires any resident to obtain a permit before holding a garage sale, defined broadly in § 9.52.010 to include yard sales, patio sales, rummage sales and estate sales of used, unwanted or surplus household goods on which no sales tax is collected. The permit application must list the seller's name and address, the sale address, dates and hours, a description of goods, and a sworn declaration that no more than three previous garage sales have been held on that property within the calendar year, and the license collector cannot issue the permit until the council-set fee is paid.

Section 9.52.030 then locks in the frequency and conduct limits: no more than four garage sales may be conducted by any person on the same property within the same calendar year, the permittee must actually reside at the property, sales may run only between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and never exceed two consecutive days, no one may be paid for letting another person's merchandise be sold at their sale, items must be almost exclusively used merchandise except handmade crafts, and the sale must stay within the garage, carport, front yard, back yard or patio, with no display of items permitted in the public right-of-way.
