Kirkwood, MO Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Section 17-77 of the Kirkwood Code, adopted by Ordinance No. 10378 on January 5, 2017, permits outdoor or partially outdoor sales of goods, such as garage sales, estate sales, moving sales and yard sales, but caps each sale at no more than two consecutive days and limits the same premises to no more than two such sales in a calendar year. The section restricts what can be sold: only items normally found in or around a home qualify, and no new merchandise or consignment merchandise may be brought in for the sale, which rules out using a garage-sale permit as cover for an informal retail operation.

A neighborhood sale or joint sale among several residents counts as only one sale toward each participating property's two-per-year limit. The section also regulates signage in detail: sellers may post no more than four directional signs off the sale property, each capped at two feet by three feet, plus one additional sign on the property where the sale is held; signs cannot be attached to utility poles or public signs, are allowed on private property only with the owner's consent, and may go in City rights-of-way only if the Kirkwood Police Department finds they create no traffic hazard.
