Long Branch, NJ Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Chapter 185 of the City of Long Branch Code requires a license before any residential garage sale. Under Section 185-2, anyone wanting to hold a garage sale or similar activity on residential property must first apply to the City Clerk for a license on the form the Clerk provides. Section 185-3 sets the fee at $10 and limits each licensed sale to a period not exceeding two consecutive days on any one occasion; applicants may submit alternate rain-date dates with their application. Section 185-4 then caps the total: each person, nonprofit or charitable organization, or premises is entitled to hold two such garage sales per year, in addition to participating in the annual city garage sale weekend, meaning a household can effectively run three sale events across the year without exceeding the local cap.

m. Section 185-6 makes the licensee and the property owner or tenant jointly and severally responsible for maintaining good order during the sale: no loud or boisterous conduct is permitted, vehicles may not be allowed to impede the passage of traffic on any street near the premises, and everyone present must obey the reasonable orders of Long Branch police or fire personnel. The ordinance was adopted May 12, 1987 by Ordinance No. 1342, carried forward from Section 6-23 of the 1971 Code.
