West Hartford, CT Holiday Decorations: Lawn Ornament Rules (2026)

Section 177-33E of the West Hartford Zoning Code lists the only sign types allowed in a one-family residence district and states that all other signs are expressly prohibited. Item (8) of that list, holiday decorations without commercial advertising, is the sole category in the entire schedule with no maximum sign area and no maximum number of signs; every other residential category, from a nameplate sign capped at one square foot to a for-sale sign capped at six square feet, carries a numeric limit. Holiday decorations must sit behind the street line, the same setback line used for a residential nameplate sign, and the code requires no zoning permit for them.

The only condition attached to the exemption is that the display carry no commercial advertising; a lawn display, inflatable figure or lighting display that incorporates a business name, logo or advertised sale crosses into a different sign category and would then be measured against the numeric caps that apply to home-occupation or sale signs under Section 177-33E(2) or (4). Because the exemption sits inside the sign chapter rather than a separate nuisance or property-maintenance chapter, West Hartford has no separate ordinance limiting how large, how bright or how many purely decorative holiday lawn ornaments a homeowner may display; the Department of Community Development's zoning enforcement applies only when a complaint alleges the display has crossed into commercial advertising or has encroached past the street line onto Town right-of-way.
