Home occupations in Santa Monica must not generate traffic beyond what is normal for the residential district per SMMC Β§9.31.160. No exterior signs, outdoor storage, or advertising identifying the business is permitted.
Under SMMC Β§9.31.160, the home occupation shall not generate pedestrian or vehicular traffic beyond that ordinarily generated in the residential district. A maximum of 6 client visits is allowed during any 24-hour period. No sale of goods on premises except products of the home occupation β no other merchandise may be sold, kept, or displayed. Mail order businesses not involving merchandise handling or home storage are permitted. No commercial vehicle deliveries except reasonable courier services. The home occupation must not result in excess utility use beyond normal residential consumption. The permit is valid only for the person issued and becomes void when they move or discontinue the business.
Exceeding 6 client visits or generating excessive traffic may result in citation, permit suspension, or revocation. Code enforcement monitors compliance.
