Section 1476.05(A)(6) of the Berwyn Code of Ordinances controls signs for businesses run from a home. The code defines a home occupation sign as a sign associated with an occupation carried on in a dwelling unit. The message is limited by the word only: the sign denotes the name and profession of the occupant or the name of the business, nothing more. Size is capped at two square feet in area, and the city allows one wall sign or window sign per lot. A ground-mounted option is not listed. The sign cannot be illuminated at all.

Because the sign sits on the exempt list in § 1476.05(A), no sign permit is required. Section 1476.02(A)(1) demands a permit to erect, construct, alter or relocate a sign except for the exempt permanent and temporary signs, and this one is permitted in all zoning districts provided it meets the standards above. Area is measured under § 1476.04 as the entire sign face or background used to distinguish the sign from the structure it is placed on, so a backing panel counts toward the two square feet.

Other Chapter 1476 rules still apply. Under § 1476.03(C)(2), a sign goes on private property only with the prior consent of the property owner, which matters for a tenant running a business out of a rented unit. Section 1476.03(C)(4) bars any sign that obstructs vision at a street, intersection or driveway. Section 1476.07 makes portable signs, vehicle signs, snipe signs and off-premises signs unlawful in every zoning district. The Building Director enforces the chapter and can inspect any sign at any time under § 1476.03(F)(2).
