Berwyn, IL Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Driveway construction and use are governed by Berwyn Code of Ordinances § 1248.08 (Site Access) and § 1248.01(C)(4).

Surface. Section 1248.01(C)(4) requires all off-street parking lots, loading areas, and driveways to be built with a hard surface, all-weather, dustless material. Semi-pervious materials and permeable pavements are allowed subject to the prior written approval of the Zoning Administrator, so gravel or bare dirt is not a compliant parking surface.

Quantity and width. One driveway per street frontage is allowed, and lots with at least 150 linear feet of frontage can add one more, at least 25 feet from the first. Table 1248.08-A caps Residential, Other driveways at 12 ft one-way and 12 ft two-way, and Residential, Multi-Family at 12 ft one-way and 24 ft two-way, measured at the lot line. Driveway flares cannot exceed three feet along the curb line. A driveway apron the width of the garage, carport, or parking pad can extend up to 20 feet in depth before tapering back to the required width.

Location. Driveways can encroach into the required interior side or rear yard but must stay at least one foot from the interior side lot line, except a shared driveway serving two adjacent properties.

Parking. Under § 1248.08(F), single-family, two-family, and townhouse dwellings can park on private driveways provided the vehicle does not encroach into the right-of-way. Medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles and trucks with flatbeds or trailers cannot park on lots in R-1 through R-4 (§ 1248.02(A)(2)). The Streets chapter, § 1020.04(B), also states that no parking is allowed in side or front yards and that driveways go to the rear yard, citing § 1248.10(A), a section that does not appear in the current Chapter 1248 text. Removing a curb for a driveway needs a permit under § 1020.04(A) with Director of Public Works inspection.
