Berwyn, IL Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

The Berwyn Code of Ordinances puts the Director of Public Works in charge of curb loading zones: the Director decides where they go and places and maintains the signs that state the hours each zone is in force. Under § 480.10(A)(1) it is unlawful to park in a designated zone on the posted days and during the posted hours except for the expeditious loading and unloading of passengers or the delivery of goods and services. A vehicle can occupy the zone for no more than 30 minutes unless the sign says otherwise, and the hazard lights must flash the entire time the vehicle is stopped there.

A business or resident who wants a zone has to ask for one. The Director will not designate a zone on someone's request unless the person applies for a permit for the zone and for two signs marking the ends of it. The application goes to the City Collector's Office on the city's form and lists the applicant's name, address and telephone number, plus any other information the Collector's Office requires. The Director then reviews the location and must determine that the installation will not negatively impact parking, traffic or the current conditions at that spot. When the permit is granted and the signs are issued, the city collects a service fee of $100 per year and deposits it in the City Treasury. The city can attach conditions to the signs, including reimbursement for the value of signs that are lost or damaged and their return if they are misused or the permit ends. Every permit expires on December 31 of each year.

One fixed location is written into the code itself. Section 480.10(C)(1) designates a fifteen minute loading area between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Wesley Avenue from 16th Street south to the southern property line of the North Berwyn Park District Community Center. Separately, § 482.02 lets the Director reserve loading zones for commercial vehicles inside parking meter zones, so meter blocks can carry their own commercial loading spaces.
