Bessemer, AL Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Two sections of Appendix B (Zoning) work together to define what a Bessemer home business can put on display. Sec. " Sec. 8(27), in the general sign regulations, addresses the same use from the professional-sign angle: professional signs for home occupations "shall not exceed two square feet in area," and it adds a placement rule the residential-district section does not spell out: the sign must be either a wall sign or a ground sign, and it cannot sit closer than 20 feet to the street right-of-way line.

Read together, a Bessemer resident running a permitted home occupation, such as a bookkeeping practice or tutoring business run out of the house, gets one small identification sign, capped at two square feet, that must either be flush-mounted or set back 20 feet from the street, and Sec. 10(4) caps it at one sign per street frontage regardless of how many home occupations operate at the address. The rule sits inside the residential sign article generally, so it inherits that article's other limits too: no flashing or intermittent illumination and no billboards or advertising structures, per Sec. 10(5)-(6).
