Boulder, CO Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Boulder's home occupation standards treat visible signage as incompatible with a residential neighborhood. Subparagraph 9-6-3(o)(1)(A)(iv) of the Boulder Revised Code requires that there is no change in the outside appearance of the dwelling unit or lot indicating the conduct of a home occupation, including advertising signs or displays. That means a home-based consultant, contractor, or online seller cannot put up a nameplate, a banner, a sandwich board, or any other exterior marker identifying the business, because the rule bars any outward sign of commercial activity, not just large advertising.

The prohibition sits alongside the broader home occupation package in Subparagraph (o)(1)(A): the business must be run only by residents, stay under half the first floor in area, and avoid detectable glare, fumes, or odors at the property line. Subparagraph (o)(1)(B) carves out one specific exception: a home occupation that meets Chapter 6-17, 'Cottage Foods and Fresh Produce,' is exempt from the outside-appearance rule along with several other standards, so a licensed cottage food producer selling from a residence is not bound by the no-signage restriction in the same way.

Every other home occupation, from tutoring to bookkeeping to craft sales, has to stay sign-free. This differs sharply from Boulder's general sign code, Section 9-9-21, 'Signs,' which allows identification signage for other permitted uses like bed and breakfasts; home occupations get no equivalent allowance under Subparagraph 9-6-3(o).
