In unincorporated DuPage County, the Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 37, Sec. 37-3.2) defines a Home Occupation as a use clearly incidental and secondary to residential use of the dwelling, and prohibits any exterior evidence β including signs, displays, or advertising β that the dwelling is being used for anything other than a residence. Incorporated municipalities set their own sign rules.
DuPage County's Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 37) governs land use in UNINCORPORATED portions of the county. Sec. 37-3.2 defines a "Home Occupation" as an occupation conducted within a dwelling unit that is clearly incidental and secondary to the use of the dwelling for residential purposes. The definition prohibits external evidence of the occupation: no exterior signs, no display of goods or services visible from outside, no exterior alteration of the dwelling that would indicate non-residential use, and no advertising that would draw customers, clients, or employees to the property. Articles VII (Residence Districts, Sec. 37-7.1 through 37-7.6) permit home occupations only where they satisfy the Sec. 37-3.2 criteria. Residents in incorporated DuPage municipalities (Naperville, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Aurora portions, etc.) must instead follow their own city/village sign and home-occupation codes β the county ordinance does not apply within municipal boundaries.
Posting an exterior home-occupation sign or advertising in unincorporated DuPage violates Chapter 37 and can result in zoning citations, stop-use orders, and per-day fines under Chapter 37 enforcement provisions. The county may also revoke the home-occupation status if exterior advertising appears. Report concerns to DuPage County Building and Zoning at (630) 407-6700.
