Home-based businesses in Eastvale may have just one unlighted identification sign no larger than two square feet, under the home occupation standards in Section 120.04.040. The general residential on-site identification sign rules in Section 120.05.070 also limit residential signage and require that any illumination source not be visible beyond the sign face.
Eastvale tightly restricts signage for home-based businesses. Section 120.04.040 of the Zoning Code, governing home occupations, provides that 'no signs other than one unlighted identification sign, not more than two square feet in area, shall be erected.' This is the controlling limit for a home occupation: a single, non-illuminated sign of two square feet or less. Separately, the city's general sign regulations in Section 120.05.070 address on-site identification signs in residential settings, permitting on-site identification signs affixed to walls, windows and doors of permanent structures that do not exceed four inches in letter height and do not exceed four square feet in area, and providing that where signs are illuminated, no light bulb, tube, filament or similar source of illumination may be visible beyond the display face. For a home occupation, the stricter two-square-foot, unlighted standard of 120.04.040 applies. The practical effect is that a home business cannot use bright, large or flashing signage, off-site signs, or window signs that advertise the business beyond the modest identification sign allowed. Larger freestanding signs, banners and other commercial signage typical of storefronts are not permitted at a residence operating a home occupation.
Erecting a home-business sign larger than two square feet, adding a second sign, or illuminating the sign violates the home occupation standards. Prohibited signs are subject to code-enforcement notices, removal orders and administrative citations.
