A home occupation in unincorporated Sacramento County may have no more than one sign, not exceeding four square feet, attached flat against the building or in a front window, and not illuminated (Zoning Code Section 5.10.1.E). Section 3.9.3.F otherwise requires no visible evidence of the business outside the dwelling.
Sacramento County Zoning Code Section 3.9.3.F.2.d (Appearance) requires that there be no visible evidence of a home occupation outside the structure other than one sign, if permitted within the zoning district, and that there be no display of products visible from outside the dwelling. The sign itself is governed by Section 5.10.1.E (Home Occupation Signs). Home occupation signs are authorized in any zoning district where a home occupation use is permitted, provided that no more than one sign is allowed regardless of the number of permitted home occupations; the sign may not be illuminated or spotlighted; it must be attached flat against the main building or placed in the window on the front of the dwelling that provides primary access to the public or private street; and the area of the sign may not exceed four square feet. The Appearance standards also prohibit remodeling or construction that makes the residence look commercial when viewed from the front. Because signage is enforced by County Code Enforcement, confirm any current permit or design requirements before installing a sign.
More than one sign, an oversized sign (over four square feet), illuminated signs, or freestanding/off-building signs violate Section 5.10.1.E and can prompt a code enforcement citation.
