The one-square-foot nameplate is one item in a full checklist a home occupation must satisfy to keep its permit under FMC 17.61.070: storage, operation or display of home-occupation materials can't be visible from outside the residence and can't exceed twenty-five percent of the dwelling's floor area, and the operation can't produce noise, odor, glare or vibration discernible beyond the site. Because the sign chapter separately exempts 'home occupation signs at the residence of currently permitted and licensed home occupations provided that the signage is less than 1 square foot' from its own permit requirement (FMC 17.59.030(C)(9)), a compliant nameplate typically clears both chapters without a second application.

A home occupation permit itself is issued by the director of planning, inspections and permitting after an application under FMC 17.61.040, and lasts one year before renewal is required under FMC 17.61.100. If the sign, or any other approval criterion, is not met, the director can revoke or modify the permit under FMC 17.61.085, and the operator can appeal a denial or revocation in writing to the planning commission within ten days, with a further appeal to the city council.
