Chapter 435, Zoning, allows a home occupation as an accessory use inside a single-family dwelling, but only under six conditions listed at § 435-9. The use must stay clearly incidental and secondary to the residence and cannot occupy more than 25% of the dwelling's floor area or 400 square feet, whichever is smaller, and no nonresident employees are allowed. No more than three customers, clients, pupils or patients may be on site at once, and only between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

On signage specifically, § 435-9E bars any exterior display or storage of goods or materials and any exterior indication of the business other than one nonilluminated identification sign that cannot exceed two square feet. The separate sign ordinance, Chapter 373, touches the same use at § 373-9J(2), which restricts a home office or home occupation sign to one color plus the background color and speaks of external illumination. The two chapters do not fully align on lighting: the zoning chapter calls its allowed sign nonilluminated, while the sign ordinance addresses illumination style for the same sign type.

Either way, the sign stays capped at one, two square feet, and a single color plus background. The sign ordinance also defines 'residential sign' to include an allowed home office or home occupation sign, and exempts residential signs from the citywide sign-permit requirement, so a compliant home occupation sign does not need its own permit.
