Kenai Peninsula Borough, AK Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

KPB 21.44.130 governs home occupations across the borough's Local Option Zoning District (LOZD) residential zones, R-1, R-2, R-R, R-W and R-M. Subsection (C)(1) sets the general rule that the outside appearance of the building or parcel cannot change so that it detracts from the property's principal use as a residence, and (C)(4) then carves out the one specific exception: one permanent sign no greater than 16 square feet may be used to advertise a home occupation, and that sign may not be illuminated. No other exterior sign, banner, or lit display is permitted, and (C)(8) separately bars any outside storage or display visible from the street or a neighboring property, other than personal or seasonal decorations.

The sign standard is mandatory on a continuing basis under (D), meaning a sign installed larger than 16 square feet, mounted as more than one sign, or illuminated after the fact is a violation even if the underlying home occupation was properly established. The rule sits alongside other exterior limits in the same section, including the ban on outdoor storage, no on-street parking, and the twenty-vehicle-trip traffic cap. Because this standard only comes from KPB Chapter 21.44, it applies only within an adopted LOZD; outside one, the rest of the unincorporated Kenai Peninsula Borough carries no zoning-based sign limit on a home business.
