Lee's Summit flatly prohibits exterior signage for a home occupation. UDO Sec. 6.1400 bars a home business from changing the dwelling's outside appearance, so no yard sign, window sign, or nameplate advertising the business is allowed on the property.
Under Section 6.1400.B of the Unified Development Ordinance, a home occupation must remain invisible from the street. Two conditions do the work: the use may not change the outside appearance of the dwelling, and exterior signage for a home occupation is expressly prohibited. That rules out freestanding yard signs, wall-mounted business signs, window lettering, and illuminated displays tied to the business. The intent is to preserve the residential character of the neighborhood, so a passerby should not be able to tell a business operates inside. Vehicle signage on a permitted one-ton commercial vehicle stored in the garage is the practical exception, since the vehicle must be kept inside when not in use.
Development Services can order any home-occupation sign removed as a violation of Sec. 6.1400, with municipal court fines until it comes down; a repeat violation supports revocation of the home occupation approval.
