Lee's Summit permits home occupations as an accessory use in any residential district under UDO Sec. 6.1400. The business must stay clearly incidental to the home, occupy no more than 25 percent of the dwelling's floor area, and receive the Director's approval.
Section 6.1400 of the Unified Development Ordinance allows a home occupation as an accessory use in residential dwellings in every district, but the use must be secondary to the residence and must not change the dwelling's outside appearance. No more than 25 percent of the gross floor area may be used, and accessory buildings such as detached garages or sheds cannot house the business. Only one commercial vehicle up to one-ton capacity is allowed, and it must be parked inside the garage. The Development Services Director approves each home occupation. Certain uses are banned outright, including auto repair, physicians and dentists, upholstery, printing, and animal boarding.
Development Services enforces Sec. 6.1400. Operating a prohibited or non-conforming home occupation can bring Director denial or revocation, an order to cease, and municipal court penalties; denials are appealable to the City Council within 14 days.
