Ontario prohibits any change in the outward appearance of the premises and bars advertising that identifies the home occupation by its street address, effectively prohibiting on-site business signage at a home-based business.
Ontario Development Code Section 5.03.240.C controls the visibility of home occupations. Operating Requirement C.4 states there shall be no change in the outward appearance of the premises, and C.5 states there shall be no advertising that identifies the Home Occupation by street address. Together these provisions prohibit business signs, window displays, or other outward indicators that the dwelling is being used for a business, and prevent advertising tied to the home's address. The intent (Subsection A) is to keep home-based businesses incidental to and compatible with surrounding residential land uses, so the residence must continue to look like a residence. There is no provision permitting a home-occupation sign, which means any nameplate or directional sign for the business is not allowed.
Posting a business sign, altering the home's exterior to signal commercial use, or advertising the business by its street address violates Section 5.03.240.C.4 and C.5. Code Enforcement may require removal and pursue administrative citations under the Ontario Municipal Code, and the Zoning Administrator may revoke the permit.
