Ontario removes abandoned vehicles under California Vehicle Code 22523 and OMC Chapter 10, allowing tow after a 72-hour notice on the windshield, with enforcement by Ontario Police Abandoned Vehicle Abatement.
Ontario participates in the San Bernardino County Service Authority for Abandoned Vehicle Abatement (SAVSA) and enforces California Vehicle Code 22523 which defines an abandoned vehicle and authorizes removal after 72 hours of notice on public property. On private property, the owner must consent or initiate a lien-sale process under CVC 22658. Indicators of abandonment include flat tires, expired registration over 6 months old, missing plates, heavy debris accumulation, and fluid leaks. Residents can report abandoned vehicles to Ontario Police non-emergency at (909) 986-6711 or submit a Code Enforcement complaint online. Once a notice is affixed, owners have 72 hours to move the vehicle or it is towed to a city-approved storage yard. Tow and storage fees are the owner's responsibility, and vehicles unclaimed for 30 days may be sold at lien-sale auction. Stolen-vehicle investigations are processed separately through the Police Department patrol division.
