Ontario requires driveways to be paved with concrete, asphalt, or approved pavers and curb cuts over 20 feet wide need an encroachment permit from Public Works under OMC Title 6.
Ontario Municipal Code Title 6 and the adopted California Residential Code require all driveways in single-family zones to be paved with concrete, asphalt, pavers, or another dustless material approved by the Building and Safety Division. Unpaved driveways and parking in front-yard landscaping strips are prohibited as public nuisances. New curb cuts and widened driveway approaches require an encroachment permit from the Ontario Public Works Agency at (909) 395-2020, and must be constructed to City Standard Plan 110. Residential driveway approaches are limited to a maximum of 20 feet wide in most districts unless approved by the City Engineer. Driveways cannot obstruct the public sidewalk, and a standard curb return of at least 3 feet must be preserved. Parking on lawns or unpaved ground is cited under OMC Chapter 10 and can result in administrative citations starting at 100 dollars. Accessible driveways serving ADUs must comply with California Building Code Chapter 11A accessibility rules if four or more units are on-site.
