Fontana allows driveway parking on paved surfaces only. FMC Title 17 prohibits parking on front lawns or landscaping. Driveway aprons need a Public Works encroachment permit.
Fontana Municipal Code Title 17 and Title 15 (Buildings and Construction) govern residential driveways. Vehicles parked on private residential property must be on an improved surface, defined as concrete, asphalt, pavers, or a decomposed-granite pad meeting city engineering standards. Parking on a front lawn, dirt, or landscaped area is prohibited and is one of the most common Code Enforcement violations citywide. Driveways must be paved from the property line to the parking area; a narrow paved strip that does not fully support a vehicle does not qualify. Driveway width in most residential zones is limited to no more than 50 percent of the front yard, preserving landscape area. New driveway aprons (the portion crossing the sidewalk and curb) require an encroachment permit from Public Works, and curb cuts must be constructed to Caltrans standards. Vehicles in the driveway must be currently registered with the DMV; inoperable or expired-tag vehicles are considered stored and may be cited as blight under FMC property-maintenance rules. Commercial vehicles exceeding 10,000 pounds GVWR are generally prohibited from residential driveway parking except for brief loading or active service calls.
Parking on a front lawn or unpaved area triggers an FMC Title 1 administrative citation, typically $100 first offense and $200 second. Unpermitted driveway expansion can require removal and restoration. Inoperable vehicles can be towed as abandoned.
