Piscataway, NJ Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Section 21-1201 sets out every sign a Residential Zone property may display, and Section 21-1201.6 covers the one type tied to a home business: a sign identifying a permitted home occupation or a professional office. That sign cannot exceed two square feet in area and must be located no less than 10 feet from the property line, and a Township permit is required before the sign is installed. The limit sits at the small end of the residential sign schedule in the same section: a house-and-family identification sign under Section 21-1201.1 is also capped at two square feet, while a sale or construction sign under Section 21-1201.2 can reach 64 square feet, an institutional sign for a church, hospital or school under Section 21-1201.4 can reach 32 square feet with a 25-foot setback, and a farm identification sign under Section 21-1201.5 can reach 10 square feet with a 10-foot setback.

Because the home occupation sign shares the smallest allowance in the residential sign schedule, a homeowner running a permitted home-based business cannot substitute a larger commercial-style sign or a freestanding sign of the size allowed in the Township's commercial districts. Section 21-1201.4 also states that signs illegally placed may be removed by Township officials and discarded, a remedy that reaches an oversized or unpermitted home occupation sign as well, since Section 21-1201.6 requires the permit for that sign class specifically.
