Redding, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

110(A)(13) of the Redding Municipal Code flatly prohibits advertising on the site of a home occupation. The single exception is for the one commercial motor vehicle a resident is already permitted to keep under subsection (A)(11): that vehicle may have signs affixed identifying the business name, but the sign cannot identify the business address, since revealing the address would defeat the ordinance's larger purpose of keeping a home occupation invisible to neighbors and passersby. This signage rule sits inside a broader no-exterior-evidence scheme: subsection (A)(2) already bars any exterior evidence of the conduct of a home occupation, and subsection (A)(14) separately bans on-site training for promotional sales, closing off using the property to pitch business to visitors.

Together these standards mean a Redding resident cannot post a yard sign, window sign, sandwich board, or vehicle wrap that lists a street address, phone-book-style banner, or any other advertising fixture on a residential lot used for a home occupation. A business that wants visible signage, such as a storefront sign or an address-bearing vehicle wrap, has to relocate to a commercially zoned property and obtain the appropriate sign permit under the city's separate sign regulations rather than operate as a home occupation. The prohibition applies uniformly across every home occupation type licensed under this section, including cottage food operations and service-based businesses, with no waiver available through the special-review process in subsection (B), which covers standards (A)(1) through (A)(15) generally but is intended for physical-disability accommodations, not marketing needs.
