Rio Rancho, NM Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Rio Rancho's home occupation ordinance takes a no-sign approach. Section 121.04(J) of the municipal code states: 'Signs. No signs advertising the business or its products are allowed on the premises with the exception of permitted signage on vehicles as noted in division (E).' This is reinforced by Section 121.04(E), which requires that there be no change in the outside appearance of the building or premises and no other visible evidence of the conduct of a home occupation, and which provides that one company-owned vehicle that is one-ton or smaller, and that may also be used for personal transportation, is exempt from that condition. The practical effect is that a home-based business in Rio Rancho cannot post a yard sign, window sign, or wall sign advertising the business; the only permitted advertising visible from the street is lettering on a single qualifying company vehicle. This keeps home occupations from changing the residential character of the neighborhood, which is one of the stated purposes of Chapter 121. (Separate, larger commercial sign permits under the city's sign regulations apply to commercially zoned properties, not to residential home occupations.)
