Roanoke County, VA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Roanoke County treats signage as one of the sharpest lines between its two home occupation tiers. Section 30-82-3(C)4 flatly states that no sign may be placed on the property advertising a Type I home occupation, and § 30-82-3(C)5 backs that up by barring any advertising through local media, including telephone books, flyers, and the internet, that calls attention to the residential address. A Type II home occupation gets more room: § 30-82-3(D)4 allows one non-illuminated sign, a maximum of two square feet in area, per dwelling, regardless of how many home occupations operate there, and that sign still has to conform to the general sign standards in Code § 30-93.

Because the allowance is per dwelling rather than per business, a homeowner running two Type II home occupations from the same address still gets only one two-square-foot sign, not one per business. The distinction lines up with the rest of the Type I/Type II framework in § 30-82-3: Type I is meant to be functionally invisible from the street, while Type II tolerates a small, non-illuminated identifier consistent with the residential character the ordinance is built to protect.
