Sauk County, WI Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sauk County's on-premises sign table at Section 7.129 sets a home-based business, lodging house, and bed-and-breakfast sign at one per parcel, a maximum copy area of 12 square feet, and a maximum height of 8 feet, the same allowance whether the parcel sits in an agricultural, residential, or commercial zoning district in unincorporated Sauk County. Before the sign goes up, the owner must obtain a sign permit from the Zoning Administrator under Section 7.117, submitting a site plan showing the sign's height, setbacks, copy area, and how it will be anchored, plus the landowner's name and address if different from the sign owner.

Section 7.135 requires every sign, including a home business sign, to sit at least five feet back from any road right-of-way and at least five feet from any side or rear lot line, and it may not sit inside a vision clearance triangle at a driveway or intersection. Illuminated home business signs are further limited: Section 7.128 caps external lighting at four fixtures aimed only at the copy area and bars flashing, moving, or color-changing light sources. A nonconforming home business sign already in place when the 2014 sign ordinance took effect may continue under Section 7.124, but if it is destroyed beyond half its assessed value it cannot be rebuilt except to current standards, and any sign found out of compliance gets 30 days to come down after notice under Section 7.125.
