Sauk County, WI Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 7.091 of the Sauk County Code of Ordinances sets the general standards for driveways under the Parking and Loading subchapter, which Section 7.089 applies to every zoning district and use whenever a land use permit is required. Section 7.091(1) requires adequate, clearly limited and defined driveways for ingress and egress, running perpendicular to the public right-of-way wherever possible, spaced a safe distance from intersections and from each other, and never located inside a vision clearance triangle; the county can also limit the number and placement of driveways to match federal, state, and local access standards.

Section 7.091(2) then sets the surfacing rule: all driveways, and all parking, loading, and circulation areas, must be paved with an all-weather surface, with grass surfacing allowed only for special events. Section 7.011(12) defines that standard precisely: an all-weather surface is any roadway, driveway, or parking lot surface covered with crushed stone, asphalt, grassy pavers, concrete, or other pervious or impervious material able to support anticipated vehicular traffic in all weather while minimizing ruts, potholes, and pooling water, so a plain dirt or mud driveway does not qualify.

Parking is allowed within a required setback area under Section 7.091(10) as long as a 10-foot setback is still maintained and no parking sits in a vision clearance triangle. A written permit for highway access from the appropriate highway authority is also part of the land use permit application under Section 7.153(4)(h).
