SMC section 8.240, Residential District Sign Standards, applies in residential districts and on public land or open space directly adjacent to one. Subsection (1) singles out home occupations: a single-family or duplex dwelling with a permitted home occupation under SDC section 4.7-165 gets exactly one non-illuminated wall sign capped at one and one-half square feet, far smaller than the eight-to-sixteen-square-foot freestanding or wall signs the same section allows multifamily complexes, day cares, subdivisions, group care facilities, and bed-and-breakfasts under subsection (2). The rule attaches to a 'permitted home occupation,' so the sign allowance depends on the business already holding its Development Code home occupation approval; there is no separate exemption for home occupation signs listed among the exempt-sign categories in SMC section 8.234.

A homeowner who wants anything bigger, illuminated, or freestanding must seek a modification (for size increases up to 15 percent over the code maximum) or a full variance under SMC section 8.238, which the development and public works director decides within 30 days of a complete, fee-paid application, with appeals running to the city manager and then the city council, each within 15 days. Because home occupation signage falls within SMC sections 8.200 to 8.268, violations are enforced as civil infractions under the citywide schedule in SMC sections 5.604 and 5.624, administered by the city's code enforcement officer.
