Surprise prohibits exterior signage for home occupations in residential zones. Home businesses must not be apparent from the exterior of the dwelling. No signs, banners, or exterior advertising indicating a business is operated from the residence are permitted.
The City of Surprise zoning code prohibits exterior signage for home occupations in residential zones. The purpose is to maintain the residential character of neighborhoods. No signs, banners, window displays, or other exterior indicators of business activity are permitted. This includes vehicle signage for business vehicles parked in driveways if they constitute advertising beyond standard company identification. Interior business activities must not be visible from the street. The city's sign regulations (Chapter 8 of the zoning code) apply citywide and are enforced by Code Enforcement at (623) 222-1200. Home business operators may advertise through online platforms, business cards, and other non-physical media. HOA communities may have additional restrictions on any visible commercial activity.
Exterior business signage at a residence results in Code Enforcement citations requiring removal. Fines may be imposed for non-compliance. Contact Code Enforcement at (623) 222-1200.
