Toledo, OH Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Toledo Municipal Code § 1113.0507 creates a distinct, narrow sign allowance for home-based businesses operating out of a residential zoning district: a Home Occupation Sign. The section defines it as a non-internally-illuminated wall sign, meaning it must be flat against the dwelling and may not contain internal lighting elements, a home occupation cannot use an EMC, backlit cabinet, or any other lit sign type permitted for commercial building signs elsewhere in Chapter 1113. The sign is capped at 6 square feet, far smaller than the area allowances for standard wall signs under § 1113.0303 Total Building Sign Area Allocation, which scale with building frontage.

The Home Occupation Sign must also meet the material standards of § 1113.1001 Permitted Materials for Permanent Signs, the same construction-material rules that apply to other permanent building signage citywide. Because the section places the sign within the broader 'Special Sign Types' group at § 1113.0500, it sits outside, and is more restrictive than, the general Wall Sign standards of § 1113.0305, which otherwise allow larger, illuminated signage subject to a Sign Permit. A home occupation itself must first be authorized under Toledo's home occupation permit standards in Part Eleven before any signage is installed; the 6-square-foot sign is a companion limit specific to that residential use, not a general commercial allowance.

Sign work in Toledo is administered by the Sign Inspector under § 1113.0901, and any home occupation sign exceeding 6 square feet or using internal illumination does not qualify for this provision and would be treated instead as a standard building sign, subject to the residential-district frontage restrictions of § 1113.0304(F).
