The zoning code's Home Occupation standards single out exterior advertising in clause (ii) of Section 9271gg: no exterior display. It's one of nine conditions every home-based business operating within the City of Tustin has to meet under Article 9 (Zoning), Chapter 2, Part 2, and unlike the traffic and parking clauses that measure impact against a neighborhood norm, this one is an outright prohibition with no threshold. Any visible sign, product display, banner or exterior marketing material tied to the home occupation is barred, regardless of size.

That's a sharper standard than the City's general sign code in Part 7 of the same Article, which allows identification signage for many commercial uses; home occupations get none of that allowance because clause (ii) forecloses exterior display entirely. The provision traces to the same 2013 recodification, Ordinance No. 1429 (Section II.47, adopted May 21, 2013), that consolidated the current Home Occupation standards, and it was left untouched by the later 2022 and 2024 amendments to the surrounding subsections. Community Development Department staff and Code Enforcement officers treat a posted sign, a lit window display or an A-frame sign on the driveway as a straightforward violation because the clause requires no impact analysis, only the presence of exterior display.
