10. The occupation cannot be more dangerous to life, personal safety, or property than any other activity ordinarily carried on in a residence used solely for dwelling purposes, and it cannot generate perceptible noise, odor, smoke, electrical interference, or vibration that becomes a public or private nuisance to neighbors. Mail-order, telephone, and internet sales, along with distribution of sold merchandise, are expressly permitted as home occupations. No alteration may be made to the dwelling that changes its residential character or gives it any outward appearance of housing a business, and the business must operate only inside the principal dwelling or an accessory building, never outdoors.

Combined, all home occupations on a property cannot occupy more than 20 percent of the gross floor area of the principal dwelling and accessory structure together, and no more than two separate home occupations may operate indoors on the same property at once. Employees are restricted to residents of the principal dwelling itself; the code does not permit hiring outside staff to work on-site. These standards apply on top of, not instead of, the underlying dimensional and use requirements of the zoning district, and a home occupation must also carry an approved business and sales tax license, which the code cross-references when it addresses non-residential uses in residential districts generally.
