Stonecrest, GA Home Business: Zoning & Home Occupation Permits (2026)

Sec. 4.2.31 of the Stonecrest Zoning Ordinance sets the full permitting and physical framework for home occupations. Type I home occupations, those with no customer contact, are approved administratively by the director of planning and zoning; anything else defaults to Type II and requires a special land use permit from the city council. Beyond the permit track, subsection C applies size, staffing and vehicle limits to every home occupation regardless of type. The use must be conducted entirely within the dwelling unit, and only persons who actually live in the dwelling may be employed there, closing off hiring outside staff to work from a home business.

Physically, no more than 25 percent of the dwelling unit or 500 square feet, whichever is less, may be devoted to the home occupation, capping how much of a house can effectively become commercial space. Operators are limited to one business vehicle per home occupation, and mobile or dispatch-only occupations may use that one vehicle as long as it meets the city's separate commercial vehicle standards in section 6.1.3. The code also folds in private educational services, capped at three non-family students at a time, and treats child care homes and personal care homes as home occupations subject to these same standards in addition to the separate group-home provisions of Section 4.2.41.
