Vermilion Parish, LA Hurricane Preparedness: Storm Debris (2026)

Section 32-2 is the Police Jury's storm-debris rule. It establishes a $13.00 per yard fee for trash and debris delivered to the Vermilion Parish Solid Waste Facility by a parish police jury vehicle or other vehicles the Police Jury authorizes. The fee applies only within 72 hours of a declared State of Emergency in Vermilion Parish. The section closes the door after that: no other vehicle is allowed into the landfill once the period ends, because of a lack of available space. The section has been amended three times, most recently on 3-18-2019.

The section does not cover routine cleanup, so the ordinary rules of Chapter 32 still govern everything else. Article II applies to the unincorporated areas of the parish under § 32-25. Section 32-34 tells residents to put branches, tree limbs, small tree trunks (six-inch diameter), small tree roots (18-inch diameter), household furniture and old carpet at the back of the road right-of-way, none of it over 18 inches in diameter or over six feet long, and to remove anything not accepted within a reasonable period not to exceed one month. Section 32-37 addresses larger accumulations: the owner removes them at the owner's expense, and if the Police Jury does it after 24 hours' notice, the owner is charged actual cost with a minimum of $100.00 for each collection.

Section 32-40 covers building debris such as plaster, roofing, concrete and brickbats from repair or remodeling, which must be privately removed by the generator, and a contractor must haul construction debris to an authorized landfill. Section 32-36 requires loads of debris to be covered with a tarpaulin or other covering to prevent spillage unless the trucks are properly loaded with debris too heavy to blow off. Section 32-52 bars placing debris so that it interferes with motor vehicle traffic in any way.
