Weston, FL Hurricane Preparedness: Hurricane Shutters (2026)

Chapter 62, Storm Shutters Regulations, was adopted by Ordinance 2010-13 in 2010. Section 62.01 encourages, but does not mandate, storm shutters on any structure certified for occupancy, and any permanently installed shutter must be designed and installed to the standards in the Building Code. The operative restriction sits in § 62.02: it is prohibited to keep storm shutters closed and secured on a structure except in four defined windows. First, whenever Weston falls inside the National Hurricane Center's five-day track forecast cone for a tropical storm or hurricane, and for ten additional days after the City drops out of every five-day cone.

Second, on an unoccupied residential dwelling unit at any time between June 1 and November 30, covering the full Atlantic hurricane season regardless of an active storm. Third, for up to 24 hours at a stretch for testing and maintenance. Fourth, whenever the City Manager exercises discretion to grant an extension of the closure period. Section 62.03 adds that any shutter type meeting the Building Code's requirements may be installed in Weston notwithstanding contrary rules from a homeowners', condominium, or other maintenance association, meaning an HOA cannot block a resident from installing code-compliant shutters even if its own covenants object.

Outside those four windows and the seasonal unoccupied-home allowance, leaving shutters closed on an occupied, year-round residence is a code violation enforced the same as other City Code infractions.
