West Valley City, UT Landscaping Rules: Artificial Turf (2026)

Municipal Code § 7-2-127 lets residents install artificial turf as landscaping, but only after obtaining a permit from the Community Development Department. The turf must sit at least 20 feet from real lawn, mimic natural grass with a minimum 1.5-inch pile height and 50-ounce face weight, carry an eight-year manufacturer's warranty, and be properly anchored, leveled, and separated from planters and property lines by a solid mow strip or similar barrier. It cannot be installed over grass or over dirt lacking a two-inch aggregate sub-base, and must drain at a minimum of 30 inches per hour. Indoor or outdoor plastic or nylon carpeting is banned outright.
