Edison, NJ Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

Edison Township's solid-waste and recycling program (Chapter 22) implements the New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act (N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99.11 et seq.), which requires every municipality to provide yard-waste recycling. Edison runs seasonal curbside collection of leaves (typically October–December) and brush, and operates a Township Recycling/Yard-Waste Drop-Off facility. Backyard home composting is encouraged and is not regulated by a specific Edison permit. Best practice (consistent with NJDEP and Rutgers Cooperative Extension guidance): keep compost bins at least 5–10 feet from a property line, use a closed or rodent-resistant design, balance browns and greens, turn regularly, and compost only plant-based food scraps and yard waste — no meat, dairy, fats, oils, or pet feces. Improperly maintained piles that attract rats or generate odors can be cited as nuisances under Edison Code Chapter 12 (Health Code). Burning yard waste is prohibited under NJDEP open-burning rules (N.J.A.C. 7:27-2). Commercial composting facilities require NJDEP Class C Recycling Approval.
