Macon-Bibb County, GA Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

Section 22-4 of the Solid Waste Management chapter places specific restrictions on how yard trimmings, defined in § 22-2 as leaves, brush, grass clippings, shrub and tree prunings, discarded Christmas trees, and similar vegetative matter, must be handled anywhere in Macon-Bibb County. Trimmings cannot be placed in or mixed with regular municipal solid waste, and they cannot go to a municipal landfill cell that has a liner and leachate collection system, or one requiring vertical expansion, unless the Georgia Environmental Protection Division signs off first.

Instead, residents and haulers must sort and store trimmings so they can be collected, composted, or otherwise handled, and the material must be stockpiled or chipped, composted, used as mulch, or otherwise beneficially reused or recycled to the maximum extent feasible. 2 and reaches no further than that state law requires. For collection, § 22-13 caps hand containers at 50 pounds each or a loose pile no bigger than three feet by three feet by six feet, placed curbside next to the regular cart; limbs must be cut to four-foot lengths and bundled if under four inches thick, and the Solid Waste Department may charge a fee once a household's yard trimmings exceed two cubic yards.
