Simi Valley supports residential composting consistent with California SB 1383 organic waste diversion requirements. Backyard composting is allowed on residential properties with proper containment and maintenance to prevent nuisance conditions.
Under California SB 1383, Simi Valley implements organic waste collection and recycling programs. Residential properties may compost yard waste, food scraps, and other organic materials in backyard bins. Compost bins should be placed in side or rear yards, at least 5 feet from property lines, and maintained to prevent odor, pest attraction, and leachate runoff. Meat, dairy, and oily foods should be avoided in open compost systems. The city's waste hauler provides green waste collection bins for curbside organic waste pickup. Vermicomposting (worm composting) is also permitted. Community composting programs may be available through the city's sustainability initiatives.
Composting that creates nuisance conditions (odor, pest infestations, or runoff) may result in Code Enforcement action. Owners receive a notice to correct the condition within 10 days. Failure to properly separate organic waste per SB 1383 may eventually result in contamination fees from the waste hauler.
