Simi Valley, CA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

01 of the Simi Valley Municipal Code adopts the 2022 California Electrical Code, Part 3 of Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations, as the City's primary electrical code, with local omissions and amendments, and keeps a filed copy available for public review at City offices. 06 specifically exempts it. That exemption list is narrow: portable motors or appliances plugged into an approved receptacle, repair or replacement of fixed motors or transformers of the same type and rating in the same location, temporary decorative lighting, reinstallation of attachment-plug receptacles (but not new outlets), replacement of an overcurrent device of the same capacity except service equipment, low-energy Class II and III control and signal circuits, and wiring operating below 25 volts and incapable of supplying more than 50 watts outside hazardous locations.

02 adds a separate permit requirement specific to electrical work at temporary events: portable wiring for carnivals, circuses, exhibits, amusement rides, traveling attractions, and film shoots needs a permit even though it is temporary. 03 governs temporary construction power, requiring that temporary wiring be removed immediately once construction, remodeling, or repair work is finished, and barring energizing a building's main service just to provide temporary lighting during construction. A conditional electrical service connection can be authorized by the Building Official when standard connection procedures cannot be followed, but that connection can be terminated once its specific purpose ends or at the Building Official's discretion.
